Therapeutic Approach
Janet’s therapeutic approach is grounded in interpersonal neurobiology, the science of how the brain, body, and relationships shape us. Rather than a narrow approach, she integrates patient input with concepts from the following to create an experience that is as unique as each individual:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Somatic Experiencing
- Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
- Trauma-Focused Therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Art Therapy
- Medical Virtual Reality Therapy
Janet is equally at home in inpatient and outpatient settings. Fluent in the clinical language of physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and naturopaths, she advocates for her patients within complex medical teams.
Brain Integration Program
Janet’s breadth of perspective gave rise to the Brain Integration Program. It is a structured, three-tier program that equips patients with a personalized clinical toolkit they can carry with them after the formal treatment ends. It provides practical, science-backed tools for daily nervous system regulation, proactive preparation, and emergency response. While it is not for everyone. This program represents some of the most comprehensive behavioral health care available for those who qualify.
Previous Professional Experience
Before entering the counseling profession, Janet served as a Navy journalist during the Persian Gulf War, enlisting in 1994 and becoming a lifetime member with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). That planted the seeds for Brain Integration Therapies, originally founded to provide quality counseling to service members and their families, free from the constraints of chain-of-command reporting. Her commitment to the military community continues through her volunteer work with Give an Hour.
Personal Life
Outside the therapy room, Janet will likely be found at a cultural exhibit or a pop-up festival in a city she is exploring. As an enthusiastic art traveler, she seeks out art museums, libraries, and staging of local and classical theatre. She enjoys visiting the homes of her favorite literary giants, tracking down historic bookshops, and timing her travel around Shakespeare productions.
She is also captivated by the built environment — the way architecture and interior design shape how people feel, heal, and move through the world. The intersection of physical space and psychological wellbeing is something Janet researches and notices. She is drawn to the water as well. With a personal and family history of Naval service, sailing is in her genes and has captured her imagination in a powerful way.
Philosophy
The same curiosity that sends her wandering through archives, studying rooflines, and crossing open water is what makes Janet an exceptional clinician. Healing, like exploration, requires a willingness to sit with the unknown, persevere through discomfort, trust the process, and stay open to where the journey leads. She is inspired by the words of Aaron Beck, the Father of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: “Everyone is behaving exactly as they should, given their history.” It is a philosophy that shapes every session, treatment plan, and interaction at Brain Integration Therapies – a reminder that healing begins not with judgment, but with understanding.
